The Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce started the Shop Local program in 2008 with the goal of asking people to be aware of the choice to shop locally and how that choice positively affects the economic health of our community. This choice ensures that their money not only helps local businesses but also kicks back to support the Monmouth police department, fire department, local schools, and road improvements, to name a few. The Shop Local program features a traveling “Make It Monmouth, Shop Local” banner that is hosted at member businesses each month and featured in the ChamberCommunicator as well as on the Chamber Facebook page.
An integral part of the Shop Local campaign is the Maple City Money gift certificate program. Maple City Money gift certificates work just like checks and are available in denominations of $5s, $10s, and $20s. This is a great way to give a gift that the recipient has the freedom to spend on whatever they would like while ensuring that the money is kept in our community. The program keeps an average of $5,600 within the Monmouth economy annually. The Chamber orders the certificates locally and makes no profit from the program.
